Backup

Once installed your OnTheButton system will contain data subject to frequent change. Over time the value of this data will exceed the value of your initial OTB investment.  Your data will become irreplaceable.  Adequate backup systems are required.

OTB recognises the value you place on your data and provides a mechanism for you to ensure that this data is adequately “backed up”.

The nature and frequency of scheduled backups can be tailored to meet local circumstances and prepared in consultation with school or authority technical support staff.

The following merit consideration:

• Frequency of backup; we suggest daily

• Media to be used

• Storage arrangements; eg on site, off site

OnTheButton data can be backed up “off server”, for example:

  • windows share
  • novell volume
  • mounted device
  • rsync server
  • ftp server

Simply select an appropriate backup to ensure your data is transferred to secure share stored on another server. This will usually be an “SMB/CIFS” share, ie a traditional windows server.  However, other options are possible.

Copying your OnTheButton data, overnight, to a separate device is a wise precaution.  This nominated server(s) may also be part of a regular backup strategy, which uses tapes and perhaps additionally involves backup “off site”.  You can nominate multiple backup devices, if you wish.
